MARY JO'S CUISINE: A Cookbook by Mary Jo McMillin
by Mary Jo McMillin

About The Book:

For nearly two decades Mary Jo's Cuisine in Oxford, Ohio stood as a landmark for food of exceptional quality and artistry.

Known for its exquisite meals and quaint--but splendid--atmosphere, Mary Jo McMillin's bistro regularly attracted patrons from Cincinnati and Dayton, as well as New York and Boston. Her culinary creations were heralded by major newspapers, magazines, and professional chefs.

In a day when stovetop ranges and ovens are too often used merely for kitchen décor, Mary Jo presents a back-to-basics approach.

While most current cookbooks present ghostwritten, celebrity-chef-driven publicity, Mary Jo's Cuisine restores the craft our taste buds can't afford to lose.

By sharing carefully tested--and tasted--recipes and featuring seasonal produce (because fresh is always best), Mary Jo takes her readers on a delightful trip back in time to when bread wasn't labeled Wonder® and soup didn't come in a can.

Anyone seeking a stunning butternut squash soup, a succulent braised beef, or the perfect bread pudding will find treasures among the 100 dishes restaurant patrons kept coming back for.

With vignettes of restaurant woes and delights interspersed throughout the book, Mary Jo's Cuisine is a terrific read and an easy-to-use cooking guide. The book is a must-have for both culinary professionals and amateurs alike.

About The Author:

A native of rural western Colorado, Mary Jo McMillin gained her culinary expertise through practical experience. Her mother, who worked the night nursing shift, would often give McMillin simple recipes to keep her busy. She learned to bake as soon as she learned to read and as a teenager was cooking for her family, friends, school and church groups.

She attended Colorado State College, where she worked in the dining hall, earned two degrees, and fell under the spell of French cooking when she helped with dinner parties. Her food passion drew her into Indian and Arabic kitchens when she lived and worked in both East and West Africa. She traveled in Europe and apprenticed in the Ballymaloe House kitchen in Ireland.

When her children were young, McMillin catered small events, baked special pastries and taught cooking classes. She wrote regular food features for the Dekalb Daily Chronicle and the Hamilton Journal-News.

In 1986 she launched Mary Jo's Cuisine. The small, magic cottage soon became the dining delight of Oxford, Ohio. Heralded by major publications, reviewers, and culinary professionals, Mary Jo's Cuisine was known for exquisite taste and exceptional quality.

McMillin claims that her cooking is simple, classic and back-to-basics. She believes food should nourish, delight and open our eyes to our surroundings, the seasons and global culture.

McMillin currently lives in Oxford, Ohio. She has two children, David and Catherine, and twin grandchildren. Still teaching various cooking classes, she can be heard every Saturday on WMUB (88.5).
